The U. S. Women’s National Soccer team, going for their third World Cup title in a row, put up a dismal performance in the knockout round against Sweden.

Throughout this year’s event, many people were speculating whether this team was good enough to win it all.

They cited many factors about the team, a new coach, and many inexperienced players being the most cited.

But then there were many off-the-field issues, mostly surrounding star Megan Rapinoe.

She has been outspoken about the rights of transgender athletes competing against women and refusing to sing along to the national anthem.

When the team was eliminated from play, much of the blame targeted Rapinoe and her lackluster play.

But that isn’t the worst of it.

The match was scoreless at the end of regulation time and after extra time, meaning the game would be decided on penalty kicks.

The first three players for the U.S., Andi Sullivan, Lindsey Horan, and Kristie Mewis scored.

For Sweden, their first two players, Fridolina Rolfo and Elin Rubensson, scored, and Nathalie Bjorn missed.

If Rapinoe scored a goal, the U.S. would go up 4-2 and have the match locked up, assuming goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher could save one of the two last kicks by the Swedish players.

But Rapinoe kicked the ball high over the goal, and the U.S. lost 5-4.

Afterward, Rapinoe said, “It’s just like a sick joke to miss a penalty.”

This led to a flurry of social media reactions, including former President Donald Trump.
